Coaches

WE HAVE GREAT COACHES!

Our Program Director, Mike Still, is an Olympian and World Champion. He won gold medals at National Championships, Pac-10 Championships, Olympic Festival, Head of the Charles, and San Diego Crew Classic. He has coached at Stanford, University of San Diego and UCLA. Mike regularly competes at the highest levels in Masters regattas on the West Coast and at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.

Our Varsity Women’s Coach, Wayne Rickert, has rowed at the collegiate and masters levels, earning numerous medals, most recently a Masters National Championship. He has coached rowing for 18 years, including four years of collegiate and a decade “plus” of junior rowing. His recent crews have won and medaled regularly at State Championships and won or placed in the top five at the National Championship.

Our Varsity Men’s Coach, Allison Frykman, has been rowing her entire life, but started rowing competitively in high school for NORCAL’s predecessor, Silicon Valley Crew.  In college, she rowed for Stanford University.  Allison still regularly competes at the master’s level.

Our Novice Men’s Coach, Axel Stelter, graduated from UC Berkeley and rowed for CAL Crew, where he won gold and silver medals at National Championaships, PAC 10 Championships, San Diego Crew Classic and Head of the Charles. He also rowed for the German National Team, where he raced at Junior World Championships and European Championships, both in sculling and sweeping. Axel also experienced international competitions within the U-23 team and raced at the Henley Royal Regatta.  As a coach, his experience reaches from coaching junior teams in Germany to coaching for the CAL Lightweight Crew.

Novice Women’s Coach, Katie Hall  A graduate of Fordham University, she actually fell in love with the sport as a Novice rower her Junior year in high school. Katie rowed 2 years in high school and all 4 years at Fordham University (even getting her dad to join a competitive masters team). She hopes to light the fire inside the incoming Novice Women with her passion, fun spirit and love of the sport of rowing that ignited in her as a Novice Junior Woman.

Our Recreational / Middle School Coach, Phil Case, is a Yale graduate and an Olympic trials competitor. As a rower Phil has competed and medaled in numerous U.S. and Canadian National Championships. As a coach, Phil has an extensive background coaching collegiate, masters and junior crews in the Midwest and East Coast.
