Strong finish earns girls surprising win

July 2010 – Cincinnati

By Greg Lydon / Daily News Correspondent

Watching on a computer screen thousands of miles from Cincinnati didn’t change the feeling for Mike Still when he saw the results.

When coach Wayne Rickert called him and confirmed the placing, the Cinderella story was true.

Still, program director for the NORCAL Crew Rowing Club in Redwood City, learned that his team of five girls placed first in the Junior Rowing Nationals Championships in Cincinnati.

“We’ve never been there before with a women’s crew,” Still said. “I was amazed when I heard the news. It was a great feeling.”

To win the Women’s Lightweight 4+ competition against 18 other boats, the five local girls came from behind, surprising their coach and themselves to earn the title.

Cassie Annunziata (Notre Dame-Belmont), Caroline Clark (Menlo School), Sarah Gregg (Menlo School), Andrea Panayides (Palo Alto High) and Pauline Nguyen (Palo Alto) made up the history-making team for NORCAL Crew.

The team had varying degrees of experience in the sport, with one member having rowed only for a little over a year, as it traveled into the unknown and rose to the occasion to earn the club’s first national title.

Clark will row for Princeton University in the fall, while Gregg will row for Santa Clara University.

The competition was streamed live over the Internet. Still watched as the team of girls stayed in third place for almost three-quarters of the race before making a push to the finish.

“We were barely hanging on to third for most of the race,” Gregg said. “I was in shock when we won. We gave a great push to finish the race strong.”

Gregg said her coach told the team of five girls before the grand final that a good race would get them a medal, but a perfect race would win it for them.

When asked if she thought they raced a perfect race, Gregg laughed and said, “Actually, we all didn’t think we ran a perfect race. There was a headwind that probably saved us, giving us the help we needed to help.”

Another factor in the victory, Gregg said, was the race playing to the strength of her team. Several teams shot out of the gate fast, looking for the early lead. NORCAL Crew started slowly, but its endurance paid off.

“Some crews die in the second half of races,” Gregg said. “We just get stronger. Everyone believed in the plan and executed the plan to get the job done for us.”

Coming into the grand final, Gregg said, there were five teams within five seconds of each other, so giving the race everything they had was critical if they hoped to win.

The crew took first place in a semifinal heat and first place at the regional tournament in Sacramento before the win at nationals.

“Before Sacramento, we were all scared to death,” Gregg said. “We had no idea how fast everyone else was.”

The same feeling followed the girls to nationals, where Gregg said prerace jitters had to be shaken off in the opening heat when they again faced unfamiliar opponents.

“We got to nationals and you get to see the other crews right before the race in the weigh-in and you see girls that weigh the same as you, but taller and stronger,” Gregg said. “It definitely worries you before a race.”

The lightweight event requires all competitors to weigh less than 130 pounds. All racers must pass the requirement right before the start of the race.

NORCAL Crew was one of four Bay Area clubs at nationals. Others included the Pacific Rowing Club, Los Gatos Rowing Club and the Marin Rowing Association.

The crew also sent their men’s quad team to nationals, but the water wasn’t as kind to them.

“It was a learning experience for the men’s team,” Still said. “We didn’t have the veteran experience on the team to tell the guys what it was like at nationals.”

The men’s quad finished 14th, but Still is excited about the prospects for both the men’s and women’s teams next season.

“We’re not losing anyone to graduation for the men’s team this season, so the experience will really make them a lot stronger next year,” Still said. “The women’s team loses two members, but we had alternates travel with them to Sacramento and gain experience that will make the dropoff, losing two members, not as severe.”

Members of the men’s quad were Nate Barker (Carlmont High), Max Minnisto (Summit Prep), Jon Schectman (Menlo-Atherton High), and Zach Segal (Homestead High).

Recent high school graduates Rachel Ersted of Palo Alto and Carolyn Rennels of Castilleja were members of NORCAL Crew’s Lightweight 4+ boat that won a silver medal at the US Rowing Youth Nationals this past weekend at Harsha Lake outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.

NORCAL’s boat won its first heat on Friday and recorded the second-fastest time in the semifinals on Saturday while finishing first.

In the grand final on Sunday, NORCAL battled two other boats — including the Long Beach Juniors’ boat that had placed first in regionals in Sacramento in May — to take second place and the silver medal. Connecticut Boat Club placed first and won the gold medal while the Sarasota Scullers came in third for the bronze.

Ersted and Rennels were in NORCAL’s Lightweight 8+ boat that placed fifth in the grand finals in 2008. They both were recruited for college rowing. Ersted will row for Cal and Rennels will row for Stanford. This spring, Cal won the Pac-10 rowing championships and finished second in the NCAA Championships held at Natoma Lake.

The other rowers in the winning NORCAL boat are all rising high school seniors: Ariana Cravalho (Notre Dame-Belmont), Sofie Madden (Menlo-Atherton) and Victoria Paterson (Menlo School).

NORCAL Crew rows out of the Port of Redwood City.

CONGRATULATIONS to Ashby Cogan, Rachel Ersted, Amy Fudenberg, Carolyn Rennels, Anna Savoie, and Claire Tolson for being selected to the 2009-2010 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll. NORCAL Crew again had the highest number of Honor Roll Recipients of any team in the nation! This is an outstanding accomplishment for our athletes and our team. Only 104 out of 292 student athletes (17 California, 5 Washington, 2 Oregon) that applied were selected for the USRowing Honor Roll.

USRowing Announces 2009-10 Scholastic Honor Roll Recipients

Friday, October 23, 2009

Fifty-two student-athletes earned 2009-10 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll honors and 52 student-athletes earned honorable mention scholastic honor roll accolades, the organization announced on Friday.

The USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in both academics and rowing. Applicants must be USRowing members, have rowed or coxed at least one year, and successfully competed at or above the league or regional level. Overall, 292 student-athletes from 128 rowing clubs and schools across the country applied for the 2009-10 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll, making it the largest pool of nominees in the history of the award.

The USRowing Youth Advisory Committee selected the recipients based on a ranking of their grade-point average in academic courses, performance on the ACT or SAT, and class rank. While fewer schools now rank their students, the nominees still included two students currently ranked as valedictorians, two currently ranked as salutatorians, and 19 others that have the maximum possible grade point average at their schools. One recipient earned a perfect score on the SAT, while several others earned a composite score of 35 out of a possible 36 on the ACT. In addition, one recipient was a member of the women’s eight that won the gold medal at the 2009 World Rowing Junior Championships.

USRowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States. USRowing’s Official Suppliers are Hudson Boat Works and Boathouse Sports; its Official Patron is Concept2; its Official Electronics Outfitter is Nielsen Kellerman; its Official Timer is Powerhouse Timing; and its Preferred Printer is Sport Graphics Printing.

San Francisco Chronicle
Jake Curtis, Chronicle Staff Writer

Having a coach who recently drove big-rig trucks as his “other” job is the first indication that the national champion Pacific Rowing Club’s boys eight crew is a little different.

The Pacific boat surprised almost everybody when it won the USRowing youth championship Sunday in Cincinnati, becoming the third straight San Francisco crew to win the prestigious title. In fact, the Pacific Rowing Club boathouse on Lake Merced is beside that of St. Ignatius High, which had won the previous two varsity eight national titles.

Bay Area rowing clubs in general fared well in Cincinnati, with the Marin Rowing Association winning the boys pairs and finishing second in the girls lightweight eight, an event won by the Los Gatos Rowing Club. The NORCAL Crew out of Redwood City won the girls lightweight four.

The glamour event, though, is the varsity eight. St. Ignatius finished third in the girls final, but it was the Pacific boys who drew the most attention.

“I think people were absolutely shocked,” Pacific coach Bob Maclean said. “We had the perfect race at the perfect time.”

Pacific, which had never finished higher than sixth nationally in the boys varsity eight, has just 14 varsity rowers, far fewer than most clubs, which typically field three or four eight-man boats. Pacific has enough for just one. And Pacific gave no indication of national-title quality earlier this season.

Pacific was third in a three-way competition with St. Ignatius and Los Gatos at the end of April and entered the Southwest Regionals, a qualifying event for the nationals, as the fifth-seeded boat. It would have been the seventh seed, if Maclean had not talked officials into moving his team up two notches, and with just three teams qualifying for the nationals, prospects were dim.

However, Pacific was improving and finished second to Capital Crew out of Sacramento.

In Cincinnati, Pacific did well in the qualifying heats, but Maclean was concerned about the second 500 meters of the 2,000-meter race, because Pacific tended to lag in that segment. He concocted a scheme in which that 500-meter stretch was divided into four segments, with each segment focusing on two of the eight oarsmen.

“It provided a need to spiritually pull for each other and not get caught up in the pain,” Maclean said.

It worked as Pacific got through that stretch well and let its endurance pay off at the end. Conditioning is a big factor for Pacific, which typically does better in the 2,000-meter races than the 1,500-meter events. Having a headwind in the finals made that conditioning advantage more noticeable.

Maclean, who drove 18-wheelers until about a year ago to supplement his income as a rowing coach, held practices that were demanding, but not atypical, consisting of two-hour afternoon practices five times a week, plus one weekday practice starting at 4:45 a.m. and a Saturday practice at 6 a.m.

To determine efficiency at workouts, he used a formula that measures watts per pound — he learned it from a physiologist of the U.S. Olympic team. A rower’s weight is raised exponentially by a factor of .67 and then divided by the number of watts the rower puts out on a rowing machine.

That’s how Maclean determined his rowers, with coxswain Allen Cummins of Woodside International School the only one from outside San Francisco. The others are seniors Daniel Silberman (School of the Arts and headed for the University of Washington), Julian Stefanski (Drew College Prep, Gonzaga), Sebastian Peterlin (Lowell, Stanford), Jon Dowell (Wallenberg, Orange Coast College), Reid Mayer (Stuart Hall, Trinity College), Ofir Calahan (Lowell, UC Santa Cruz), and juniors James Berg (Lick-Wilmerding) and Peter Nedeau (Riordan).

Inside Bay Area

SEVERAL LOCAL ROWERS had strong showings at the U.S. Rowing Championships at Lake Harsha, located near Cincinnati, Ohio, recently, led by boats from Serra High, St. Ignatius and the NorCal Crew Club of Redwood City.

Andrew Tight of Menlo Park, who just graduated from Menlo School, and Miles Dobbyn of San Carlos, a recent graduate of Carlmont, teamed to finish fourth in the 2,000 meter petit finals (two oars). The result placed them 10th in the national doubles race overall.

Rowing out of the NorCal Crew Club, Tight and Dobbyn had raced as a doubles team only three times before the nationals. Tight will be attending UC Davis in the fall, where he will continue with his crew career. Dobbyn will be rowing at Loyola Marymount.

The pair won a bronze medal at the Southwest Regional Championships in Folsom in May.

Meanwhile, Serra’s lightweight crew team finished fourth in the finals. And the St. Ignatius heavyweight eight boat, which included Hillsborough residents Mike Gibson and Derrick Johnson, finished first. Gibson and Johnson will be leading their squad to England for The Henley Royal Regatta, June 28 to July 2.

Derek Kinzler, who graduated from Menlo College this year, attended the Colorado Rockies’ two-day free agent camp recently and impressed scouts enough to be signed to a minor-league contract. Kinzler, who was a shortstop for the Oaks, was assigned to the Rockies’ rookie level Pioneer League affiliate in Casper, Wyo., and is expected to be in uniform when the team ˜ the Casper Rockies ˜ hosts Idaho Falls today.

Kinzler was recently named to the Association of Division III Independents All-Baseball First Team. He was the only Menlo player to appear in all 28 games this past season, hitting .296 and leading the Oaks in runs scored (23) and stolen bases (10). A native of Northridge, Kinzler’s 140 career hits rank third in Menlo College team history.

This is the second straight year that a Menlo player has signed a free-agent contract. Catcher Jimmy Goethals signed with the Houston Astros last year, and is playing for the Tri-Valley ValleyCats, the Astros’ short-season Single-A affiliate in Troy, N.Y.

It was great to hear from George Blondino recently. Blondino was a long-time youth baseball coach in Redwood City ˜ primarily with the Woodside Plaza Merchants Little League Majors team in the Redwood City National League (formerly the Foothill League), where he coached for 35 years.

George is now living the good life in El Dorado Hills, but his commitment to youth sports in the Bay Area has not ended. The George Blondino Youth Baseball Foundation, which was started in 1997 in honor of Blondino’s 30-plus year coaching career, has grown through private donations, garage sales and alumni mail-outs, from about $2,000 to more than $11,000 today. This year the foundation’s Youth Baseball Fund will pay out $1,300 to Little League and Senior League programs in Redwood City.

But the foundation is looking to expand to help other leagues on the Peninsula. They are looking for additional donations, and also youth baseball leagues in need of help. If you can help, or know someone who can, contact the Peninsula Community Foundation, c/o the George Blondino Youth Baseball Foundation, at 1700 South El Camino Real, Suite 300, San Mateo, CA, 94402-3049, or contact Nancy Riffle at (650) 364-6938 or NRiffle@mac.com, or George Blondino at thcoach1@sbcglobal.net.

For the first time in more than 20 years, East Palo Alto is fielding a Babe Ruth baseball team. The problem is, because the team is starting from scratch, funds are low. They are in need of uniforms and equipment. Also, the practice field is in need of repair.

East Palo Alto was able to secure one sponsor, but much more is needed. Parents are trying to do everything they can to help and keep up morale, but it’s been a challenge. The team still needs: Babe Ruth-size bats; baseballs; a soft toss net; helmets; first base glove; whiffle balls.
If anyone can help, with used equipment, funds, or simply your time, please contact the County Times and the number below, and we will forward along the information.
