John holds an M.A. in Sports and Fitness Management from the University of San Francisco (1997) and a B.A. in Physical Education with an emphasis on Sport Management from the University of California, Berkeley (1988). His educational background has provided him with a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of sports management and physical education.
John’s professional journey is marked by a series of high-profile roles and accomplishments. John just resigned as the Head Coach for USC Men’s Crew (2021 – 2024), where he was instrumental in re-building the competitive rowing team. His previous coaching roles include leading the Marin Master Women, Pre-Elite, and Elite Men, showcasing his versatility and ability to train athletes at various skill levels.
In addition to his coaching roles, John is the owner of Kaitz Performance Training (2008 – Present), where he provides elite rowing training and comprehensive fitness programs. His expertise extends beyond rowing; he has been a Strength and Conditioning Consultant for renowned athletes such as Jonny Moseley and Michelle Roark since Spring 2001.
John’s coaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that success in sports requires a holistic approach, integrating physical conditioning, mental toughness, and teamwork. His innovative training techniques and dedication to athlete development have consistently produced top-performing teams and individuals.
