Matthew Owyang
Women's Competitive Coach
Matthew Owyang brings more than 15 years of coaching experience across youth, collegiate, and high-performance rowing programs. Throughout his career, he has developed athletes at every level, combining technical expertise with a passion for athlete development, recruiting, and team culture.
Before joining the coaching staff, Matthew held coaching positions at the University of Delaware, Loyola Marymount University, Drexel University, Yale University, and Oakland Strokes, where he coached numerous crews to championship performances at conference and regional regattas. His experience spans novice, varsity, and elite development programs, with a strong reputation for building competitive crews while fostering a positive, athlete-centered environment.
In addition to his collegiate coaching career, Matthew served as Production Leader and Waterfront Manager for Hydrow, where he oversaw the execution of live and on-demand rowing content while managing waterfront operations and safety. His extensive knowledge of equipment management, rowing technology, recruiting, coxing, and program administration makes him a valuable resource both on and off the water.
As a collegiate athlete, Matthew was a four-year coxswain at Trinity College, earning four New England Championships, two ECAC National Invitational Championships, and a victory at the Head of the Charles Regatta in the Collegiate Eight. He also competed with Bantam Boat Club, placing third at the USRowing Elite National Championships and racing at the Henley Royal Regatta.
Matthew is passionate about helping athletes maximize their potential through technical excellence, disciplined training, and a supportive team culture. His coaching philosophy emphasizes attention to detail, consistent communication, and developing confident, resilient athletes who succeed both on the water and beyond.
